The Minerva Center for the Rule of Law under Extreme Conditions
Information and Analysis Session
on the Initiatives of the Forthcoming Government in Israel
Related to Israel’s Constitutional Order, the Rule of Law, and Israel Public Legal Institutions
Monday, December 19, 2022, at 18:00 (Israel time)
via Zoom
General elections were held in Israel just over a month ago and a new government is about to be formed. It will be the most right-wing and religious government Israel has ever seen, headed by Benjamin Netanyahu, who ironically may well be the most liberal in his coalition government.
From the Coalition agreements that have been signed between the Likud and the other parties slated to form the government, it emerges that the new government is planning major reforms in the judiciary, in the state public legal apparatus, and in the relationships among the branches. In our opinion these reforms will amount to constitutional and regime change, and pose a significant threat to the democratic nature of Israel.
The Minerva Center for the Study of the Rule of Law Under Extreme Conditions will hold an information and analysis Zoom session on these planned reforms on Monday 19/12/2022 at 18:00, moderated by the director of the Minerva Center, Prof. Eli Salzberger.
Speakers will include:
Prof. Amnon Reichman – on the overruling clause
Prof. Gad Barzilai – on judicial appointments
Dr. Maya Mark – on the use of democratic rhetoric to justify anti-democratic reforms
Prof. Alexandre (Sandy) Kedar – on the police, army and the management of the occupied territories
Following these short presentations, other researchers of the Minerva Center will offer short comments and the floor will be opened for questions/answers and discussion moderated by Prof. Deborah Shmueli.
