Community Policing and Counter-terrorism in North Eastern Nigeria

Abstract
This study delves into the complex relationship between community policing and counter-terrorism efforts in Northeastern Nigeria, with a particular focus on the ongoing insurgency led by Boko Haram. It critically evaluates the efficacy of community policing as a tool for terrorism mitigation, considering the roles of local law enforcement, grassroots intelligence gathering, and the cultivation of public trust. Employing a qualitative research approach, the study identifies gaps within Nigeria’s current counter-terrorism strategy, scrutinizing how these deficiencies impact both the effectiveness of counter-terrorism operations and community safety.
By analyzing community-based security initiatives, this research highlights the transformative potential of collaborative security frameworks in fostering a resilient, proactive approach to terrorism. The findings contribute to the broader discourse on the role of community engagement in national security, proposing that community policing may offer a viable, sustainable model for enhancing counter-terrorism efforts in Nigeria and the world.
Ameh Moses is a PhD candidate of political science in the University of Ibadan, Nigeria. He holds a masters degree in International Relations and bachelors in Political science from University of Ibadan and Kogi state university respectively. He is currently a graduate, research and teaching assistant at the department of political science, University of Ibadan. A recipient of the federal government scholarship award for studies in tertiary institutions in Nigeria. His research interest includes terrorism and counter terrorism, national security, insurgencies and the impact of conflict on the state. His current research intersects community policing and counter terrorism in North Eastern Nigeria with emphasis on Intelligence gathering by local communities and government law enforcement agencies.
