Abstract 

Memorials and monuments play a crucial role in a community’s post-disaster reconstruction effort. From establishing a personal and collective connection to the area, to educating on past events and even establishing a local and national identity. In this talk I will take a small town In northern Japan, Ishinomaki, that was severely hit by the 2011 tsunami, as an example of post-disaster memoryscape construction. I will explore the connection between memory and space, and try to connect it to the still very young commemoration industry post October 7th in Israel.
